LSIF Projects

Morley College

For the Carbon Literacy Project, carbon literacy training was undertaken by governors, members of the Senior Leadership Team, managers, staff, and students.

One aim of our project was to increase awareness among our 16–18-year-old students about their carbon footprint.

To achieve this, we adopted an in-house approach by recruiting staff motivated and able to become Sustainability Champions across a range of curricula. They were upskilled through professional Carbon Literacy Awareness training, which they adapted and cascaded within their departments across Morley College to other staff. A broader number of tutors then delivered and / or integrated Carbon Literacy awareness training across curriculum areas to students. Bespoke micro-credential badges were issued to both tutors and students who completed the course.

One issue that presented a challenge was partially due to a short LSIF project year. In the summer term / end of academic year, realising all goals of the Carbon Literacy project became more difficult because target 16–18-year-old students needed to focus on meeting the requirements during demanding exam and assessment periods. In response, next year, we will ensure training is completed before this busy summer period.

We are planning a whole-college approach to expanding our Carbon Literacy Awareness training programme to include more staff, and to reach out to more students from all four Morley College Centres, tailoring training to different curriculum areas with relevant attention to particular needs / specialist knowledge.

Our other main project aim was to establish a Green Hub at our Stockwell Centre, which we achieved within Year 1. We started organising and providing education and training for Community Learning students and the broader community, to increase awareness about sustainable living. Next academic term, we plan to run workshops and short courses focused on behaviour change and sustainable living.
